ﺍﻟﺤﻤﺪ ﷲ ﺍﻟﺬﻱ ﻳﻬﺪﻳﻨﺎ ﺍﻼﺳﺎﻼﻡ و ﺍﺻﻄﻒ ﺍﻟﻤﺻﻄﻔﻰ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺻﻠﻰﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ و ﺳﻠﻢ و ﺑﻌﺪ.
I have a great many acquaintances who would classify themselves as followers of a “Salafi Minhaj”. That is to say they follow, or better said, attempt to follow, the first three generations of Muslims who existed. It must be stated at this time that as Muslims, we are in agreement that theses are the best people ever to live, as per the hadith (See Salikulhaqq’s Glossary of Islamic nomenclature), in which the Prophet salaam Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said“The best generation is my generation, then the one that follows, then the one that follows.”
Narrated Imran bin Husain: “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The best of my followers are those living in my generation (i.e. my contemporaries). and then those who will follow the latter” ‘Imran added, “I do not remember whether he mentioned two or three generations after his generation, then the Prophet added, ‘There will come after you, people who will bear witness without being asked to do so, and will be treacherous and untrustworthy, and they will vow and never fulfill their vows, and fatness will appear among them.”
Narrated Abdullah: The Prophet said, “The best people are those living in my generation, and then those who will follow them, and then those who will follow the latter. Then there will come some people who will bear witness before taking oaths, and take oaths before bearing witness.” (Ibrahim, a sub-narrator said, “They used to beat us for witnesses and covenants when we were still children.”).
Naturally, all Muslims look to the those early generations are venerated and we view them as our roll models.
But time has come where now people say that they look to the early generations, Are are looking to the later generation. The coiner of the phrase is said to be Muhammad Abduh the student of Jamal Ad-din. Al-Afghani.
Some link these men and their movement to British Intelligence. Perhaps that is a stretch, however, the intolerance of their followers towards others cannot be questioned.
The following has been stated: ”
There was of course an ulterior motive for Cromer making Abduh the most powerful figure in all of Islam. You see, in 1898 the ruling council of Al-Azhar University had reaffirmed that usury, and thus banking according to the Western model, was harem (illegal) according to Islamic Law. This was unacceptable to Lord Cromer because his given name happened to be Evelyn Baring -he was an important member of England’s prestigious Baring banking family that had grown rich off of the opium trade in India and China. Lord Cromer installed his friend Sheikh Abduh to change the law forbidding banking, and once he was made Grand Mufti he used a very liberal and creative interpretation of the Quran to fabricate a loophole that allowed the forbidden practice of usury. British banks then had free reign to dominate Egypt. In Lord Cromer’s writings he says, “I suspect my friend Abduh was in reality an agnostic,” and he commented on Abduh’s Salafiyya movement saying, “They are the natural allies of the European reformer.” Even Cromer saw that the Islamist movement could be used to Britain’s advantage.”
All that being stated, we must admit that their zealotry of hadith authentication is comendable. However, they use layman as their reference to hadith.
The greatest malady regarding the average individual who claims they follow the “salafi method” is their refusal to admit their taqleed or blind following of their shaykhs or teachers. If they are asked to look at a paper or composition written by anyone other than ‘scholars’ they are familiar with, they refuse. When they are asked to read or understand about the history of the last 500 years, in order to understand why the Ummah is in the state it is in, “I will leave that to the students of knowledge,” is a likely response.
They refuse to condemn the Saudi “Royalty,” who in historical reality are nothing but thugs who used this Neo or pseudo salafi paradigm to say that the Ottoman’s were beyond the pale of Islam and thusly fair game for an offensive Jihad. At the time, the debauchery and corruption of the Turkish Sultan was viewed as a reason for overthrow.
Now, the debauchary and corruption of the Saudi “Royalty” is well know in Saudi culture. Thus they, the,’royals’ get weak minded and spiritualy corrupt Islamic Scholars to issue fatawas stating that protesting is unlawful in the shariah (Islamic jurisprudance). If these people earnestly desire to follow the Salaf they would wish to re-establish the Caliphate (Khilafah). Yet on the majority of the pseudo-salafi websites groups that advocate for this are considared blame worthy.
